The Munster Cricket Board met online on Monday 16th August 2021
The meeting was pleased to note that Richard Brewster had agreed to take up the position of Chairperson from David Griffin at the next AGM and Richard was unanimously co-opted onto the Board in the role of Chairperson designate.
The meeting congratulated Cork Harlequins on being the first Munster Club to reach the All Ireland T20 competition final and wished them well in their upcoming match against Brigade CC from the North West Union.
General Manager, Joe Moynihan, provided an overview of the performances of Munster Heat in the Future Series competition in which they had recorded two victories and had performed very competitively against some much more experienced teams. He also briefly reviewed the performances of the U17 and U15 squads in their interprovincial competitions which had also been positive. Full reviews of all of these squads will be carried out at season end which will support discussions with Cricket Ireland regarding arrangements for the 2022 competitions and arrangements for squad training in Munster in the winter months.
Joe Moynihan also noted that arrangements had been finalised with the Local Sports Partnerships in Cork and Limerick for work in primary schools this autumn and discussions were ongoing with Kerry, Waterford and Clare partnerships regarding similar programmes in those areas.
Operations Committee Chair, Joe O’Mahony updated the meeting on the progress with the competitions at all levels. As we now have an Operations officer in place, it was agreed that the terms of reference of the committee would be reviewed at season end to incorporate this role into the workings of the committee. Joe O’Mahony also noted that a detailed review of Regulations would also take place to deal with some glitches that had come to light during recent weeks.
It was noted that inter-club matches were taking place at each age level. Recommendations from the P&P committee regarding how best to build on this progress in future seasons is expected to be available at the next Board meeting in September.
Brian McNamara updated the meeting on discussions he has had with Cricket Ireland and with medical colleagues concerning dealing with the risks around concussion injuries. The Board agreed to formally adopt the ECB concussion guidelines. Guidance and protocols will be issued to clubs in advance of the 2022 season and will be posted on the website. Development of the protocol will be done in consultation with Cricket Ireland.
The current financial position of the Union was noted as being satisfactory albeit significant amounts of expenditure will arise in the last quarter of the year regarding development work and winter training but this will continue to be monitored closely.
The General Manager was congratulated on the successful outcome of applications for Sports Capital Grants and Cork City Council grants which will be used to acquire the necessary equipment for training purposes, matting wickets and ground equipment which will be available for use by all member clubs. The Board will meet again on 20 September.
