Lismore Cricket Club one of Munster’s oldest cricket clubs, having been founded in 1872, when the first committee meetings were recorded, and the first full season of games played. The club is located in the fertile lands of the Blackwater Valley and on the farmlands of the iconic Lismore Castle, Co. Waterford. As the only club in the MCU with a traditional grass wicket as the sole playing surface, visiting teams are always presented with a challenge, given that many are used to playing on artificial pitches.
Whilst the club has faced many challenges throughout the last 152 years, it’s a pleasure to report that LCC is currently enjoying a significant resurgence. 2024 saw the allocation of funding for professional-grade covers to help protect the venerable square, and will help no end in producing competition wickets of a consistent quality going forward.
The dedicated membership of 40 members has one eye firmly on the future, and is embarking on the highly successful Cricket Ireland children’s programmes- “Smash It” and “It’s Wicket”. These programmes are a wonderful way to introduce youngsters to our great game, and by focussing on developing a Youth Section, Lismore CC is blazing a trail for the continued growth of the club.
“Smash It” is an introductory programme that provides a platform for both girls and boys aged 5-9 to have great fun in an inclusive and friendly environment. Smash It is being championed by Club Secretary Dan Dixon, a passionate New Zealander who sees this as an ideal opportunity to help the club to expand. “It’s Wicket” is a programme for girls only, and helps develop and refine the cricket skills of 9-13 year olds.
Lismore will be running Smash It and It’s Wicket over 9 weeks, at the cost of only €30 per child. Children will receive 9 fun-packed sessions, plus a participant pack of a backpack, T-Shirt, Bat and Ball- all delivered directly to the child’s home. The excitement! 😊 The sessions will be run on Wednesdays from 6.30-7.30pm. Dates are 3rd,10th,17th, 24th, 31st July and 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th August.
