The Rebirth and Rise of cricket in historic Glenstal Abbey:  welcome to Munster’s Newest Competitors Glenstal Cricket Club

The origins of cricket at Glenstal Abbey trace back to the Barrington era of the estate. The iconic castle and surrounding lands were constructed in the 1830s by the wealthy Anglo-Irish Barrington family, and reflecting the fashion of many grand contemporary estates across the country, the vast grounds were regularly used to host traditional country cricket matches.

This sporting tradition reached a new peak in the 1940s, as the modern legacy of cricket at the Abbey became deeply intertwined with the Benedictine monks who had purchased the property in 1927. This golden era reached its pinnacle in 1946 with a legendary Munster Schools Cricket Cup Final, which saw Glenstal take on rivals Rockwell College in a fiercely contested, historic match that firmly established the school’s cricket pedigree in regional sporting folklore.

The Munster Schools Cricket Cup was inaugurated by Mr Cyril O’Donnell, who later became Irish Cricket Union President in 1963. The following photographs are from the archives of Bryan O’Donnell, Cyril’s son, who is the Cricket Ireland President 2026/27. The images below illustrate the rich history of cricket at Glenstal.

Unfortunately schools cricket in Munster gradually began to decline, and  eventually was no longer played in Glenstal. Fast forward seven decades, and schools cricket is once again gaining popularity by the day in Munster!

That brings us to the rebirth of Glenstal CC.

From Zero to Groundbreaking: The Meteoric Rise of Glenstal Cricket Club

A chance meeting in September 2024 between Renjith Kumar and Karan Gupta sparked the dream of founding a private cricket ground. By early 2025, Jijo Kurian and Jino George joined the mission. Armed with a golden tip from Sarah Fitzgerald, they approached Glenstal Abbey to attempt to rekindle the dream of cricket once again being played there. The breakthrough struck in August 2025 when Br. Padraig signed the lease, transforming 6 of 500 acres of historic monastic land into a brand-new cricketing theatre of dreams. The club is very grateful to Br. Padraig and the Abbey for their vision and positivity in bringing the dream to reality.

By November, Glenstal Cricket Club was born.

The 2026 Momentum: History in the Making

What followed was a demonstration of sports club recruitment and execution. In just months, the club expanded to 50 paid members. On April 12, 2026, the team padded up for its first match, and by April 27, their stunning home ground was officially inaugurated.

To fast-track player development, the club launched its own tape-ball tournament to transition local tape-ball fans and students into hard-ball players to represent the club in MCU cricket leagues.

Simultaneously, Glenstal CC is already engaging in friendly matches with Munster Cricket Union (MCU) clubs, as well as competing in the MCU T20 and Minor Cups. After testing their mettle in friendlies against Limerick CC, Limerick Blasters, and United Cricket Clonmel, the club is gearing up for a blockbuster T20 double-header against powerhouse clubs Cork County and Nenagh CC on May 31, followed by a fierce Minor Cup clash in June.

A Sustainable Empire: Diversity, Safety & Next-Gen Domination

Glenstal CC isn’t just playing the game; they are fully embracing it. Driven by an uncompromising commitment to diversity and safety, the club’s leadership is actively building a sustainable future:

  • Expanding the Frontier: Committee member Sarah Fitzgerald is pioneering a brand-new women’s team, while Chairman and Safeguarding Officer Renjith Kumar is collaborating with Limerick’s Sarfraz Ramay to launch a high-performance youth academy next year.
  • Safety First: Ensuring high standards, Karan Gupta and Jijo Kurian have completed certified first-aid training with the Irish Red Cross and University Hospital Limerick.
  • The Blueprint: Next season, Glenstal CC aims to have 80+ paid members, empowering them to unleash four separate teams across the MCU pyramid—from Division 4 all the way with an ambition to ultimately form part of the prestigious MCU Premier Division.

The Dream Team Behind the Vision:

  • Chairman: Renjith Kumar
  • Director: Karan Gupta
  • Secretary: Jijo Kurian
  • Treasurer: Jino George
  • Safeguarding & Welfare/Women’s Officer: Sarah Fitzgerald

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Glenstal Cricket Club to the Munster cricket family. Nurturing youth interest and establishing new playing facilities are vital to creating pathways for the next generation of local talent. Glenstal Abbey provides a fantastic environment for the sport to flourish, and we are committed to working closely with their coaches and volunteers to help this club move to the next level of achievement. – Joe Moynihan MCU CEO
