Students from Limerick spent the day with Cricket Ireland Coach Education Manager Stephen Maxwell and Munster Cricket Union Development Officers as part of their Transitional Year (TY) programme in association with Limerick Sports Partnership. The group of 30 students were introduced to the philosophy and techniques used to produce high quality cricket coaches, including:

The Art of Listening

Effective demonstration

Leadership

Intervention

Positive reinforcement

The group participated enthusiastically in the sessions, culminating in playing a match to put all they had learnt into practice. There was some real talent on display, despite none of the students having played a competitive cricket match before. As well as the theory and practical elements of the course, students will complete the Cricket Ireland Smash It and It’s Wicket! online modules, at with point they will all be certified Activators and be able to put their qualification to good use when coaching.

Well done to the participating students! The MCU offers similar programmes for TY students across the province on a modular basis. The 6 week certification covers a wide range of skills and training, and is both rewarding as well as giving a coaching insight into a sport that is the second most popular in the world.
