A Storied Past, A Thriving Present

Nestled in the heart of Cork City, Cork County Cricket Club boasts a rich history dating back to 1874. 2024 marks a momentous occasion – the club’s 150th anniversary – a testament to the club’s resilience and enduring passion for the game. But Cork County is far from resting on its laurels. It’s a vibrant organisation experiencing continued growth and fostering a love for cricket across all ages and abilities.

Cricket at the Mardyke dates back further to the year 1850 when a pivotal moment in Cork’s sporting landscape occurred as the Mardyke Cricket Club hosted its first recorded match. This momentous occasion ignited a passion for the game, attracting players and spectators from all walks of life. The sport’s popularity soared and matches were eagerly anticipated events. In 1874, a significant transformation took place within the club, marking its transition from a recreational organisation to a competitive force in the Irish cricketing landscape. The club formally adopted its current name, Cork County Cricket Club.

Earlier this season, the club marked its 150th anniversary with a prestigious fixture against an MCC Secretary XI which included stars such as Graeme Swann, James Hildreth and Jack Brooks along with guest speaker and President of the MCC Mark Nicholas in attendance. The event merged past with the present with a host of past players and members of the wider cricketing community attending including Cricket Ireland President Stella Downes.

Cork County is more than just a cricket club; it’s a thriving community and boasts a strong membership exceeding 275, encompassing:

  • Adult Cricketers: Five senior men’s sides cater to a range of abilities, ensuring there’s a team for everyone.
  • Future Stars: A robust youth section fuels the club’s future. Dedicated U17, U15, and U13 teams ensure a steady flow of talent but more importantly a fun and safe environment for development.
  • Women’s Cricket: Recognising the growing interest in the women’s game, Cork County proudly fields a dedicated women’s team in the inaugural Munster Women’s T10 League.
  • Squash, Social and Family Members: The club goes beyond cricket, offering squash facilities and a welcoming social space for members and their families.

As part of the 150th activities this season, the club has also partnered with the Crann Centre to boost awareness of the charity amongst members and the wider community. The Crann Centre provides life-long solutions for people and families living with neuro-physical disabilities.

The 1st XI competes in the Leinster Championship and has been part of the Cricket Leinster league structure since 2010, showcasing their skills against top competition. During this time, the club have won both Division 3 and Championship titles.

The Colts (U15) further their development by playing in the Leinster U15B League. Beyond competitive success, the club prioritises development with qualified coaches to ensure as many members as possible receive the support they need to grow their skills and love for the game.

Cork County proudly calls the Mardyke its home ground. This iconic venue has witnessed countless cricketing memories over the years including international, List A and high level club fixtures to name but a few. In August, it is set to be the stage for the finals of both the Irish Senior Cup (ISC) and National Cup (NC). These prestigious fixtures coincide perfectly with the club’s 150th anniversary, further solidifying Cork County’s place as a key element of the Irish club scene. It is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of groundsman Matt Reed who rightly was acknowledged as the 2023 Irish Groundsman of the Year.

The club always strives to embody the spirit of cricket – a sport for all ages and abilities. With a thriving membership, strong youth development, and commitment to inclusivity, the club is well-positioned for a successful future. As it celebrates 150 years as a sporting institution in the heart of the city, Cork County looks forward to continuing to inspire generations of cricketers at the Mardyke and beyond.
