St Luke’s School Douglas recently had a visit from Munster Cricket Union with a double session of cricket fun! 5th and 6th classes had the opportunity to participate and show their skills at batting, bowling, and fielding.
The level of engagement and participation was brilliant! All the students grabbed the opportunity to become involved to the full, as confirmed by the noise level and excitement.
“It was a fantastic session with great energy,” said National Programme Co-ordinator Glenn Brokenshire. “ The children were so focussed, enthusiastic and absorbed that the time flew. We started off with some basics in the school hall, then moved outside for a mini match- the ball was flying everywhere off the bat!”
It’s not the first time that students at St Luke’s have experienced cricket, and a number of the children play with local clubs. Covid affected the ability to host sessions, and now the focus of the School and Club Development Officers (SCEOs) is to rekindle the connection with the school.
“We’re in a great place now,” continued Glenn “For the first time, Munster Cricket has 2 full time SCEO’s on the ground plus my own role as National Programme Co-ordinator. We now have the ability to bring cricket to schools from Tralee to Waterford, and from Cork to Nenagh.”
“St Luke’s has been very supportive of Munster Cricket Union. Principal Olwen Anderson has welcomed us and the team warmly, and now that Cork Sports Partnership has teamed up with us, we have the ability to provide a quality multi week programme to students in Cork. We are hopeful that other Sports Partnerships across Munster will see the success we are having here in Cork, and offer similar programmes to their own students in Tipperary, Kerry, Clare, Waterford, and Limerick.”
Schools in Cork who would like to avail of the fantastic Cork Sports Partnership Cricket Programme for 2025 can apply here.
