The Munster Cricket Union (MCU) is excited to announce the second year of a partnership with Cork Sports Partnership to introduce cricket programmes to 20 schools in Cork.
This innovative initiative aims to engage both primary and secondary school students in the sport of cricket, offering a multi-week curriculum designed to develop fundamental skills, tactics, and game play. The programmes will be delivered by professional Development Officers from the MCU, ensuring a high-quality and enjoyable learning experience.
Speaking at the launch of the project recently, Maurice O’ Sullivan, Sport and Marketing Manager with Cork Sports Partnership said “We look forward to working with Munster Cricket over the coming year to introduce the sport of cricket to more schools in Cork. Cricket is a growing sport in Cork and this programme will ensure that over 2,000 children will have the opportunity to experience cricket in a supportive environment.”
“We are delighted to partner with the Cork Sports Partnership to bring cricket to schools across Cork,” said Joseph Moynihan, CEO of MCU. “Our goal is to not only introduce students to the sport but also to foster a love for cricket and create opportunities for them to participate at a club level”.
“Schools within a 30km catchment area radius of our current clubs in Cork City (Cork County CC, Cork Harlequins CC) and Midleton (Midleton CC) will be prioritised as part of phase one of the programme roll out which will facilitate an easy transition for players to these local clubs. We also welcome expressions of interest from schools all across Cork as we want to grow the sport of cricket in non-traditional playing areas as well.”
Munster Cricket hopes to establish an Interschool league in the coming months, allowing schools to compete against each other and further develop their skills. This initiative aligns with the MCU’s broader vision of growing the sport of cricket in Munster and inspiring the next generation of cricketers.

Programme Outline:
This 5 week programme teaches students the basics of batting, bowling, fielding, and gameplay through engaging 45-minute sessions (up to 4 classes). A Blitz Day wraps up the programme with a day of cricket games if scheduling permits. Teachers can train as Cricket Activators, allowing them to lead future cricket sessions, meeting CPD requirements and fostering school-based cricket activities.
