Amid growing interest in cricket, the Munster Cricket Union held a successful “come and try” event in Kilrush. The community field, prepared by local groundsman JJ, provided an ideal setting for the event.
This event was as a result of Clare Sports Partnership’s keenness to promote cricket in the Clare community and Mary Taylor who first suggested this field as an ideal venue was delighted with the response on the day.
Local cricketer Mijin Manu Jose and his fellow enthusiasts put on a fabulous spread of hot food under a marquee with music to boot belting out some good old rock numbers to get the atmosphere pumping.
Under blue skies, 30 players participated in three competitive softball matches. The presence of 12 female spectators hints at future participation. Local Munster Development Officer Hugh Harvey-Kelly also organized “Smash It” games, keeping children entertained.
The event’s success underscores the enthusiasm for cricket in West Clare. The hope is to support the creation of a West Clare Cricket Club, potentially leading to matches against teams from neighboring regions.
